چکیده

Live scleractinian corals are a prime microhabitat for many recruiting coral reef fishes, yet live coral cover has exhibited widespread declines, and the impact of this loss on recruiting fishes is not well understood. Although reduced recruitment rates of parrotfishes (Scaridae) have been observed after loss of coral cover, increased juvenile parrotfish abundance observed in connection with increased macroalgal abundance on reefs suggests that some parrotfish may be capable of utilizing macroalgae as recruitment microhabitat. To test this hypothesis, recruitment rates of newly settled stoplight parrotfish Sparisoma viride were measured on reefs in the upper Florida Keys that have lost much of their coral cover. Although S. viride has previously been shown to strongly associate with the branching coral Porites porites on Caribbean reefs, we found that on reefs with low coral cover, S. viride occurred most frequently in areas of high cover of the macroalgae Dictyota spp. Further, this microhabitat association scaled up such that reefs with increasing macroalgal cover (up to ~16%) supported greater densities of juvenile S. viride. At higher levels of Dictyota spp. (>16% cover), site-specific S. viride recruitment leveled off, suggesting the influence of other processes such as differential larval supply. These results indicate that newly settled stoplight parrotfish are able to utilize the increased macroalgal cover associated with loss of coral cover and that this microhabitat may provide an alternative recruitment refuge.

A standard unit for monitoring recruitment of fishes to coral reef rubble

We developed a benthic standard monitoring unit for recruitment of fishes (SMURF) to sample fishes that settle in coral rubble and tested it on three fringing reefs on the west coast of Barbados, West Indies. These rubble SMURFs are inexpensive to construct and permit newly settled fishes, including cryptic, secretive and small species, to be quickly and fairly completely (>83%) removed by dive...

Differential effect of early post-settlement processes on the abundance of two concurrently settling coral reef fishes

Studies of early post-settlement processes in coral reef fishes have focused on small, sedentary species and have neglected the larger, more mobile, fished species. However, because recently settled fishes of both types are small and sedentary, early post-settlement processes might be similar. Here, we compare early post-settlement population dynamics of two naturally co-occurring taxa, Spariso...

Dispersal of Symbiodinium by the stoplight parrotfish Sparisoma viride.

Environmental reservoirs of zooxanthellae are essential for coral larvae settlement; understanding where they occur and how they are maintained is important for coral reef ecology. This study investigated the dispersal of Symbiodinium spp. by the stoplight parrotfish Sparisoma viride, which had high mean densities of viable and cultivable Symbiodinium (3207-8900 cells ml(-1)) in faeces. Clades ...

Variable temporal relationships between environment and recruitment in coral reef fishes

Studies of coral reef fish recruitment have focused more on factors influencing the return of larvae to reefs and the process of settlement than on factors affecting survival in the plankton, despite the well-documented importance of the larval environment for temperate marine species. We examined the ability of environmental factors to explain temporal patterns of recruitment in 8 taxa of cora...

Depth-Variable Settlement Patterns and Predation Influence on Newly Settled Reef Fishes (Haemulon spp., Haemulidae)

During early demersal ontogeny, many marine fishes display complex habitat-use patterns. Grunts of the speciose genus Haemulon are among the most abundant fishes on western North Atlantic coral reefs, with most species settling to shallow habitats (≤12 m). To gain understanding into cross-shelf distributional patterns exhibited by newly settled stages of grunts (<2 cm total length), we examined...
